Treat obesity with a specialist in Kaiserslautern:

Interdisciplinary long-term obesity therapy for patients from Kaiserslautern

KAISERSLAUTERN. Around a quarter of Germans suffer from morbid obesity, known in medical terms as adiposity. People are considered obese if their body mass index is higher than 30 kg/m2. Scientific studies clearly show that above this threshold, the risk of secondary diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular problems or joint pain increases significantly. However, many obesity patients fail to reduce their weight on their own. For Professor Christian Wüster, who also treats patients from Kaiserslautern at his hormone and metabolism centre, one thing is certain: ‘Obesity is a chronic disease with mostly complex causes. Those affected need long-term, competent medical care based on the latest research.’

Specialist for Kaiserslautern: Possible hormonal causes of obesity must be clarified

In many cases, obesity is caused by a lack of physical activity and a diet that is high in fat and sugar and overall too high in energy. However, such clear causes cannot be identified in all patients. In his practice, Prof. Dr. Wüster regularly treats people who have gained weight due to metabolic or hormonal disorders.

‘Morbid obesity can be caused by conditions such as hypothyroidism, brain tumours or hyperadrenocorticism,’ explains the expert, who recommends: ‘If a patient’s obesity cannot be clearly explained by their lifestyle, an endocrinological diagnosis of exclusion should always be carried out.’

Multimodal care programmes for obesity patients from Kaiserslautern

Identifying the individual causes is an important first step. Only then can the treating physician develop a tailored treatment plan. “If the obesity is indeed caused by hormonal factors, the underlying disease must of course be treated accordingly,” emphasizes endocrinologist Prof. Dr. Wüster. Furthermore, patients require long-term support to gradually change their lifestyle and thus pave the way for weight loss. Prof. Dr. Wüster and his team rely on interdisciplinary programs that combine insights from nutritional medicine with behavioral therapy, exercise, and sport. For severely overweight patients with a BMI of more than 40 kg/m2, bariatric surgery is also an option for long-term weight reduction.
